Your jar works from minute one, the bank paperwork can wait

Here is the dirty secret of most tipping and payment apps: the sign-up isn't the hard part, the identity checks are. Connecting a bank means Know-Your-Customer verification, and somewhere between 'photograph your ID' and 'confirm your address history', most people drift off. In the first version of JamJar, roughly nine in ten performers who signed up never finished bank onboarding. Nine in ten jars that never earned a penny, not because nobody tipped, but because the jar wasn't allowed to catch anything yet.
So we rebuilt the journey around one rule: the jar works from minute one. Print your QR the moment you join. Take tips tonight. Do the bank paperwork whenever you like, your money accrues safely until you do.
How accrual works
When someone tips a jar whose owner hasn't connected a bank yet, the payment still goes through in full, by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay, exactly like any other tip. The money lands with our payment provider and is recorded to your jar as an accrued balance, visible on your dashboard as 'waiting to claim'.
The moment you connect your bank through Stripe, five minutes, one time, everything you've accrued settles to your account automatically, and every tip after that pays out on the normal schedule. Nothing is lost, nothing expires, and the ratings and feedback attached to those early tips were building your profile the whole time.
- Join free, and your QR works immediately.
- Tips accrue in full, with ratings and messages attached.
- Your dashboard shows the growing 'waiting for you' balance.
- Connect your bank once, and the accrued balance settles to it.
Why this matters more than it sounds
Momentum. The best moment to start earning is the gig you're playing tonight, not the one after your paperwork clears. A performer who sees '£40 waiting for you' has a very different relationship with a bank form than one staring at 'complete verification to activate your account'. One is claiming money that's theirs; the other is doing admin on faith.
It also changes how venues roll out team tipping: put QRs on the tables today and let each team member connect their bank in their own time, no launch day blocked on the slowest form-filler.
"£40 waiting for you" converts better than "please complete KYC". It isn't close.
Is my money safe in the meantime?
Yes. Accrued tips are held with Stripe, the payments infrastructure behind millions of businesses, not in some app wallet. Every tip is individually recorded in the ledger with its amount and fee, your dashboard shows the exact pending figure, and settlement is automatic the moment payouts are enabled. If a tip is ever refunded, it simply drops out of the balance before settlement.
Frequently asked questions
How long can tips accrue before I connect a bank?+
There's no deadline. Your balance waits for you, itemised, and settles automatically whenever you complete the five-minute Stripe connection.
Do accrued tips cost more in fees?+
No, the platform fee is identical whether a tip settles instantly or accrues first. Premium members' 0% fee applies either way.
Do fans see any difference tipping a not-yet-connected jar?+
None. The scan, the payment and the thank-you screen are identical. Fans never need to know (or care) about your onboarding status.
